Daisy's Diner

Moving to a new area of Park Slope and having a broken stove is a perfect formula for culinary exploration. The area I'm living in now happens to have a lot of diners, the lack of which I was always complaining about when living further north. Unfortunately, none of the diners I've been to have lived up to my expectations, Daisy's Diner being no exception. Perhaps I have a romanticized vision/taste of what a diner should be in my head that no diner can ever really live up to...

Anyway, at Daisy's I ordered the Devil's Muffuletta, it involves chicken, chili, ham, and swiss cheese all on a roll. It was pretty intense and kinda good for the first couple bites but got old fast. Especially as I felt my arteries clogging up. Other than that I don't have much to say about the place. I'll probably keep going back only because it's open 24 hours and to see what other devious treats Daisy has in store for me!

There's something about the word "pita" that seems to invite whimsical plays on the word when it comes to opening a restaurant. First there was Pita Pan and now there's Pita Hut. Ha. Unfortunately, the fun ends there. After a long walk to Target and back I was starving and figured Pita Hut would be a quick tasty meal. However, the Chicken Kabob sandwich I ordered took forever to make and was not very good at all. The hot sauce was more like red water and the pita they used was so structurally unsound that I ended up just putting it down and eating the whole thing like a salad. I don't think I'll ever be going back again.

Brooklyn Burger Joint is conveniently located right off the F so it's one stop or a short walk from me and one stop or a short walk in the other direction from the sketchy Prospect Park movie theater. As for the food, I must say I was quite satisfied with the burger, especially the bun part of it. I was also a fan of the little wedge fries and the managable thickness of the burger as a whole once topped with the accompanying garnishes (tomatoes and onions). The space seems a bit cramped but sitting at the bar and eating was enjoyable and for a late Friday night dinner the regular burger and a Delirium Tremens really hit the spot.

Was it worth the little extra wait? Sure, I guess. I had a Blue (blue cheese, tomato, onion on a rye roll) and a Spike (red onion sauce, jalapenos, on a rye roll). Both were pretty good, the jalapenos on the Spike had a lot more kick than I expected them to. The bread appears to be fresh baked and the dawgs are yummy plus they have a large assortment of mustards. One thing that I really want to check out next time is the nice little backyard they have setup.

I had the prix fixe which consisted of a tuna tartare amuse-bouche, artichoke soup, hamachi, and black bass. I would describe how they were prepared except that I don't exactly remember. I do remember that the black bass had delicious crunchy skin and was served on top of a very creamy polenta. I actually can't really think of anything bad to say about the food other than that the portions weren't exactly the most filling, but Saul isn't exactly a place you go to have a filling meal. However, it is a good place to impress a date or your parents.

Apparently I can now write multiple reviews for a restaurant so I thought it would be most fitting if I wrote about Stone Park since it's my favorite restaurant in Park Slope and my original review doesn't do it justice at all. The first time I reviewed it was after my first visit there. I had a burger and it was good but I wasn't blown away. Since then I've been back many many times, usually for brunch.

The brunch at Stone Park is great. My favorite thing to get is the biscuits and gravy which is phenomenal. The hangtown fry is great as well if you like oysters, although it's a little heavy on the grease factor. It's pretty hard to go wrong for brunch here. Oh yeah, the smoked salmon and bagel: YUM!

Dinners at Stone Park have been consistently great as well. The scallops are delicious and the short rib mini burger appetizer thingy is so damn good that you'll be temptd to just order a couple of those for dinner. If you're not up for anything fancy the regular burger is always a good fallback too.

Lastly, the service has been consistently great (and a bit eccentric at times) and what more can you ask for than great food and good service? Nice atmosphere I guess... well, they've got that too!

Great food for brunch and dinner. Their burger with blue cheese is a little messy to eat but delicious.

They have Trivial Pursuit, need I say more? Yes? Okay, well... they have good coffee and also serve wine and chocolates. A great place to sit around and do nothing for a couple hours.

Decent Thai food. I've had some very good meals and a couple bad ones. If they have the Thai style buffalo wings, get them. If they serve you undercooked chicken (like they did to me), don't eat it.
