We visited Alchemy very soon after opening, and during restaurant week to boot. The food was very good but a little overpriced. The service was friendly but belied the newness of the place--highlights were spectacularly shattered dropped dishes, and one waitress falling on her butt. All in all, though, I enjoyed dinner and look forward to trying it again when they have a little more experience under their belts and aren't overrun with slumming Manhattanites.

Nice atmosphere, not too crowded on a Saturday night but not empty enough to be depressing, pleasant but not overbearing service, and yummy food! The shumai were only lightly fried and nicely shrimpy, the boiled Chinese spinach was not overcooked, and the tako (octopus) tempura was deliciously fried and mayonnaise-y. The green-tea mochi are also good. Portion sizes are great--you can end up perfectly satisfied whether you're really hungry or just in the mood for a snack.

Really delicious snacks--it's like the "Top Chef" version of comfort food. I especially like the "beer cheese", and I've also enjoyed the pizza and the selection of 3 hamburgers. Jahola and I did have an hour-and-a-half wait time for lunch there one day, but we came in at 3 in the afternoon...maybe the cook was out?

I felt mixed about chocolate mousse and some little cakes I brought home, but loved the mini passionfruit tarts. Did I mention the hot chocolate?

I actually only refrained from "never again"-ing Sette because I'm ending up with too many negative reviews! The last time I was here I ordered a baked pasta dish, and half the noodles were burned black. My dinner on a previous visit was fine, but for the price of  a sit-down I want something good. The service ranges from indifference to smarminess. In all fairness though, I can't drink since being knocked up, and it seems like what many snitchers like about Sette is the wine.

The free wi-fi is great, and the grown-up atmosphere makes it easy to get work done. I agree that the staff is really friendly. And I actually like their hot chocolate, which is more American-style (as opposed to the syruppy gloop Jahola likes). That being said--the pastries are REALLY DRY and not good (and way overpriced), the chocolates and truffles also suck, and the sole decaf tea isn't very good either. The savory offerings are better, but they only have one option at a time, which is tough if you're hoping to, say, sit there all day and write grad-school applications. Although they have no control over the AC (it's a building-wide system), it's arctic. If you need a place to work it's perfect, but for chocolately goodness head over to the far superior Chocolate Room on 5th.

The pesto ravioli and angel hair with shrimp are both good, yummy very large burgers (but limp fries), and the ribs are delicious 2 out of 3 times I get them. The sauteed spinach and mashed potatoes are also very good--pounds of garlic in the spinach. Best delivery pizza in the Slope (which isn't saying much), but the pizza is way overpriced.

The only worthwhile place in the Slope to bring guests for an inexpensive meal. Huge California-style burritos, and the rottiserie chicken is also delicious. Once in a while they have carnitas, so it's worth asking. The guac and the pico both have cilantro in them, so if you're not a fan make sure to avoid those--they're happy to leave them out.
