I completely agree with Ben. This place looks pretty inauspicious from the outside, but they serve buttery, melt-in-your-mouth fish in portions small enough to eat gracefully and in good proportion to the rice. The bento box lunch is a great deal, and we've really enjoyed everything we've ordered from the specials list. This is my go-to place for pre-BAM and post-shopping-on-5th-ave meals.

Since I'm a vegetarian, I don't choose Japanese restaurants often, but Taro Sushi is top notch. Their avocado and cucumber rolls are better than anyone else's...but what you really should order are the sweet potato roll and the tempura asparagus roll. Yum yum yum. Since the atmosphere isn't great, get take-out and eat it in the park (or on my deck).

The atmosphere here is horrendous and it doesn't look like the sort of place you'd want to be eating raw fish from but you couldn't be more wrong! I had the omakase here and had an amazing meal. The sushi chef asked me if there was anything I can't or won't eat and as soon as I told him I'd eat anything he handed me a fried giant shrimp head. I almost changed my mind about that "eating anything" claim but I didn't want to insult the chef either and so I took a bite and ended up being very pleasantly surprised. The rest of the meal was also full of surprises. The Uni was creamy and delicious and a piece of eel that I had was unlike any eel I had ever eaten before. It was slightly baked, seasoned with salt, and just sort of disintegrated in your mouth. A fabulous experience from beginning to end. Sit at the sushi bar, order the omakase and prepare for a treat. Oh yeah, did I mention the place is dirt cheap for a sushi restaurant as well?

Ranks with the best sushi in New York - really.  Every variety of fish is consistently superb, sliced delicately into ideal size bites, and paired with rice that is neither overly sweet, overly sticky, nor overly cooked - just right.  The specials can seem weird as they actually represent true Japanese cuisine, and while the flavors may occasionally jar the less adventurous, the mastery of flavors, textures, and presentation is consistently evident.  Unlike some, I'm not appalled by the decor - I actually find it sort of charming and homey.  That said, given the quality of the food, the scale and appearance of this restaurant skew considerably toward the humble.  I love my deck and don't mind taking the sushi out and eating at home.  The saki list is decent, but since you don't really go to Taro for the experience of the locale, I'd recommend getting take-out and buying a nice bottle of cold saki at any of the good wine shops in the Slope.

ginormous lunch portions. where else do you get soup and salad? also, it tastes really good. the only thing that upset me was the decision to bring two of us soup & salad, and the other two of us sat there like bumps on a log. they could've brought four soups, and then four salads.

I live down the street from here and walk by it daily on my way to and from the Q train. In the evenings when I get offwork and am too tired to make something for myself, I walk by this place... and just keep walking.

I have been there a few times - a few times more than I'd like to say based on the above noted predicament - and every time the sushi tastes just mediocre. The fish isn't very fresh, ever. The servings are small, and the one time that I decided to sit down and eat instead of taking it with me, the service was horrible - slow, awkward, alienating.

I do like that they have a little book at each table describing all the different sushi and how it's prepared, but come on!

MUCH better is up Flatbush a few blocks @ 7th Ave - Sushi Geido. They don't deliver, but they do deliver great sushi (that was sort of a little joke... anyway). They have a great atmosphere with weird stuff in Japanese painted on the walls. It's affordable. The service is always excellent (tho sometimes there's a waiting line).

and if you want good sushi delivered to your house - call Sushi Tatsu 718-638-7900, also on Flatbush. Stuff is DOPE!!!

Have to disagree with you Stanley.  I've been going to Taro for over a year pretty regularly and while the wait staff service can be patchy the quality of the food has always been exceptional.  If you like sushi or if you want a food experience that is unique in new york then the omakase here is really something else.  Yes the place doesn't look very fancy but in my opinion if the food is more important than what's on the walls then who cares?  That's not to say the service is rude, it's always polite but some of the waiters are a bit slow.  So sit at the sushi bar and order the omakase EVERY time.  You won't regret it.  Stanley ate in once and had a bad experience, don't judge this place by that.  Every time I have been there the fish was so fresh it would melt in your mouth.  Best restaurant in Brooklyn.

Taro is amazing, with the caveat that they only get the special fish delivery fish once a week or so.. I have to refer to Ben who provided me with that information. This place is so amazingly charming in it's simplicity you couldn't go any further from the sushi NY cliche, this place is far from posh in terms of decor but it totally makes up for it in flavor and deliciousness.
